Financial management in the CA syllabus
Financial Management terms cover the decisions a finance manager makes — investment appraisal, cost of capital, capital structure, working capital and dividend policy. The subject is examined at Intermediate and extends into Advanced Financial Management at Final, blending theory frameworks with intensive numerical application.
FM questions are decision-oriented: they give you data and ask what the firm should do. Each term — NPV, WACC, operating leverage, cash conversion cycle — is both a concept and a computation, and examiners test whether you know when to use which tool as much as how to calculate it.
How to study this area
- For every technique, learn three things together: the formula, the decision rule, and the assumptions it rests on.
- Build the links between topics: cost of capital feeds into NPV, capital structure affects cost of capital, leverage connects both.
- Practise full-length problems that combine topics — exam questions rarely test one concept in isolation.
- Maintain an error log of numericals; FM mistakes are highly repetitive and an error log converts them into marks.
Where it appears in exams
- Capital budgeting — NPV, IRR, payback comparisons
- Weighted average cost of capital computation
- Leverage analysis and EBIT-EPS decisions
- Working capital estimation and management
Common pitfalls
- Using book value weights where market value weights are required in WACC.
- Treating depreciation inconsistently in cash flow estimation.
- Confusing operating, financial and combined leverage effects.

Talk to usNPV and IRR give different rankings — which do I choose in the exam?
State the conflict, then follow the standard resolution: NPV is preferred for mutually exclusive projects because it measures absolute wealth addition and assumes a more realistic reinvestment rate. Showing you know why earns the marks.
How much theory does the FM paper carry?
A meaningful minority of marks — typically short notes and distinguish-between questions on concepts like capital structure theories or dividend policies. They are quick marks if your terminology is solid.
