What is True and Fair View?

Financial statements that are factually accurate and free from bias or material misstatement.

What is True and Fair View?

A true and fair view means the financial statements are factually correct, prepared in accordance with the applicable financial reporting framework, and present the entity's position and performance without bias or material misstatement. 'True' addresses factual accuracy and compliance; 'fair' addresses freedom from bias and the faithful reflection of substance. It is the standard against which the statutory auditor forms an opinion, and it is deliberately not the same as absolute accuracy.

Think of it like…

Think of a witness statement rather than a photograph. A photograph captures every pixel; a witness gives an honest, complete and unbiased account of what mattered. Financial statements are the second kind of record — they need not be exact to the rupee, but they must not mislead.

How True and Fair View works

  • Compliance with the framework. Statements must follow the applicable accounting standards and statutory presentation requirements.
  • Freedom from material misstatement. No error or fraud material enough to influence users' decisions may remain uncorrected.
  • Substance over form. The economic reality of a transaction must be reported, not merely its legal form.
  • Adequate disclosure. Material information must be disclosed; concealment defeats fairness even where the numbers are technically correct.

Why true and fair is not absolute accuracy

Worked examplestep by step
  1. 1Financial statements contain estimates — depreciation, provisions, impairment
  2. 2Estimates cannot be exact, only reasonable and supportable
  3. 3Audit uses sampling, not examination of every transaction
  4. 4Therefore the opinion is reasonable assurance, not a guarantee
  5. 5The test is whether users would be misled, not whether every figure is precise

Where it shows up

  • The audit opinion. The statutory auditor's report expresses an opinion on whether the statements give a true and fair view.
  • Overriding presentation. Where compliance with a rule would mislead, additional disclosure is required so that fairness is preserved.
  • Evaluating estimates. Reasonableness of management estimates is judged against this standard rather than against exactness.
  • Assessing disclosure adequacy. Omitted material information can defeat a true and fair view even when the reported figures are correct.

Common mistakes

  • Equating true and fair with arithmetical accuracy
  • Assuming an unmodified opinion guarantees the absence of fraud
  • Ignoring the fairness dimension once technical compliance is established
  • Treating disclosure as optional where the numbers are correct

Talk to us
Does true and fair mean the accounts are 100% correct?

No. Financial statements involve estimates and audits involve sampling, so the standard is that the statements are free from material misstatement and do not mislead — not that every figure is exact.

Does an unmodified opinion guarantee no fraud exists?

No. An audit provides reasonable, not absolute, assurance. Inherent limitations — sampling, collusion, management override — mean some misstatements may remain undetected.

What if following a standard would produce a misleading result?

The framework requires additional disclosure so that a true and fair view is achieved. Fairness is not satisfied by technical compliance alone.
