TDS vs TCS

TDS is tax deducted by the payer while making a specified payment. TCS is tax collected by the seller from the buyer at the time of sale of specified goods.

The quick answer

TDS moves tax out of a payment before it reaches the recipient. TCS adds tax onto a receipt collected from the buyer. In TDS the deductor pays less; in TCS the collector receives more.

Questions test the consequences of default more than the mechanics — interest for late deduction versus late payment, disallowance of expenditure, and penalty. Learn the consequence chain, not just the rate.
