Why this paper matters
AFM is the technical core of corporate finance, treasury and valuation careers. It is also one of the highest-scoring Final papers for well-prepared candidates.
Chapter-wise weightage
Indicative distribution based on the published syllabus structure. Always confirm against the ICAI study material for your attempt.

- Derivatives — Futures & Options20 marks
- Business Valuation & M&A20 marks
- International Financial Management & Forex20 marks
- Capital Budgeting & Cost of Capital (advanced)20 marks
How to actually score it
- Speed is the binding constraint. AFM questions are long. Most candidates who underperform knew the method but ran out of time. Every practice session must be timed.
- Derivatives need one clean payoff diagram. Draw the payoff before computing. It prevents sign errors on short positions, which are the most common source of lost marks.
- Valuation questions want a stated assumption. When data is incomplete, state your assumption explicitly and proceed. Examiners reward a defensible assumption over a blank space.
- Forex requires ruthless clarity on quotation. Direct versus indirect quote confusion invalidates an otherwise perfect answer. Write the quote convention at the top of every forex solution.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Practising untimed and discovering the length problem in the exam
- Sign errors on short derivative positions
- Inconsistent use of direct and indirect forex quotations within one answer
- Skipping the theory portion, which is short and fully scoring

Talk to usIs AFM the most scoring CA Final paper?
For candidates who practise under timed conditions, it is among the highest scoring, because answers are objectively right or wrong and partial marks follow visible workings.
How much does Intermediate FM matter here?
Considerably. Capital budgeting, cost of capital and leverage are assumed knowledge. Revising Intermediate FM before starting AFM saves time overall.
Should I show formulas in the answer?
Yes — state the formula, substitute, then compute. Visible workings earn step marks even when the final figure is wrong.
