Why this paper matters

FM is the direct precursor to Final Advanced Financial Management — capital budgeting, cost of capital and working capital all scale up. SM shapes how you frame business advice.

Chapter-wise weightage

Indicative distribution based on the published syllabus structure. Always confirm against the ICAI study material for your attempt.

  • FM — Cost of Capital & Capital Structure15 marks
  • FM — Capital Budgeting15 marks
  • FM — Working Capital Management15 marks
  • FM — Ratio Analysis & Leverage5 marks
  • Strategic Management (full section)50 marks

How to actually score it

  • Do not sacrifice Strategic Management for FM. SM is half the paper, needs no computation and is among the fastest sections to revise. Students routinely lose easy marks by under-preparing it.
  • Capital budgeting is the FM anchor. NPV, IRR, payback and profitability index appear every session. Learn how the cash-flow table is built and the rest is arithmetic.
  • Cost of capital must be exact. WACC errors cascade through the whole answer. Practise computing the cost of each component separately before combining.
  • SM answers need frameworks, not opinions. Name the model — SWOT, Porter's five forces, value chain, BCG — then apply it. Unstructured commentary scores poorly.

Mistakes that cost marks

  • Leaving Strategic Management to the last week despite it carrying 50 marks
  • Errors in working capital cycle computation from mixing up days and turnover
  • Using post-tax and pre-tax figures inconsistently in cost of capital
  • Writing SM answers as general business opinion without naming a framework

Is Strategic Management easy to score?

It is among the most scoring sections in Intermediate — finite frameworks, no computation, fast revision. Its reputation for being 'easy' is exactly why students under-prepare it.

How much practice does FM need?

Solve at least ten capital budgeting and ten working capital problems fully. FM errors are usually arithmetic and presentation errors, and both are fixed by repetition.

How does this connect to CA Final?

Final Advanced Financial Management extends this into derivatives, valuation, portfolio management and international finance. A weak FM base at Intermediate makes Final AFM considerably harder.
