Why this paper matters
GST compliance and advisory is the largest recurring practice area for Indian CAs. This paper maps almost directly onto billable work.
Chapter-wise weightage
Indicative distribution based on the published syllabus structure. Always confirm against the ICAI study material for your attempt.
- GST — Supply, Levy, Time & Place of Supply25 marks
- GST — Input Tax Credit & Valuation20 marks
- GST — Procedures, Returns & Refunds20 marks
- Customs — Levy, Valuation & Procedures25 marks
- Foreign Trade Policy10 marks
How to actually score it
- Place of supply is the paper's pivot. Get place of supply wrong and the entire tax computation — CGST/SGST versus IGST — collapses. Determine it before anything else.
- Input tax credit is the highest-frequency topic. Eligibility, blocked credits, apportionment and reversal recur every session and carry weight in both computation and theory.
- Do not under-prepare customs. Customs carries roughly a quarter of the paper and is more finite than GST. It is among the best mark-per-hour blocks at Final.
- Learn procedures as timelines. Registration, returns, refunds and assessments are all deadline-driven. A single timeline table replaces several chapters of notes.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Determining tax liability before establishing place of supply
- Missing blocked credits under the ITC provisions
- Neglecting customs valuation, which is computational and scoring
- Using superseded rates or thresholds from an earlier attempt's material

Talk to usIs Indirect Tax easier than Direct Tax at Final?
Many candidates find it more predictable because GST and customs are rule-based and procedural, with less interaction between provisions than direct tax.
How much of the paper is customs?
Customs and foreign trade policy together carry a substantial share. Treating the paper as GST-only is a common and costly preparation error.
Do amendments matter here too?
Yes — GST is amended frequently through notifications and circulars. Always work from the material and RTP applicable to your specific attempt.
