Why this paper matters
Direct tax is among the highest-paying specialisations in Indian practice. International taxation in particular is where advisory fees and career differentiation concentrate.
Chapter-wise weightage
Indicative distribution based on the published syllabus structure. Always confirm against the ICAI study material for your attempt.

- Assessment, Appeals & Procedure20 marks
- International Taxation & DTAA20 marks
- Transfer Pricing15 marks
- Taxation of Non-Residents & Special Entities20 marks
How to actually score it
- Confirm the applicable assessment year first. This paper changes more than any other. Studying a superseded assessment year is the most expensive error available to a Final candidate.
- International taxation is the differentiator. Residence, source, DTAA relief and the treaty-versus-Act interaction are heavily examined and comparatively under-prepared.
- Transfer pricing rewards method clarity. Name the method, justify why it is most appropriate, then compute. The justification carries marks independent of the arithmetic.
- Cite sections and, where relevant, judicial position. Precision signals command. A stated section with a correct principle outperforms a well-written but unattributed paragraph.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Preparing from an earlier assessment year's material
- Confusing DTAA relief methods — exemption versus credit
- Skipping procedural chapters on assessment and appeals, which are reliably examined
- Computing without stating the section under which the treatment arises

Talk to usHow do I keep up with amendments?
Use the ICAI study material, the Revision Test Paper and the amendment supplement notified for your specific attempt. These define the cut-off date that the examiner applies.
Is international taxation worth deep preparation?
Yes. It carries substantial marks, is comparatively under-prepared by candidates, and is directly valuable in practice — a rare combination of exam and career return.
How much case law is required?
Landmark positions on frequently examined issues help, but the paper is primarily statutory application. Prioritise provisions and computation before case citation.
