Choosing an articleship firm without narrowing your options

The firm you pick shapes the next three years and the five after them. The criteria that matter are not the ones most students select on.

Overview

Articleship is the longest single commitment in the CA course and the one students research least. The decision is usually made on brand and stipend, and regretted for reasons that have nothing to do with either — narrow work allocation, no study leave in practice, or a seat that turns out to be one task repeated for three years.

Large firm or mid-size firm

A large firm gives structured training, a recognised name and exposure to substantial clients, but often within a narrow specialisation — you may see one part of the audit of very large companies. A well-regarded mid-size firm typically gives you whole engagements early, covering statutory audit, tax and advisory in the same year. Neither is better in the abstract; they suit different intentions.

  • Large firm: depth, brand, structure, narrower allocation
  • Mid-size firm: breadth, earlier responsibility, less structured training
  • If you want practice eventually, breadth usually serves you better
  • If you want corporate or consulting roles, the brand carries more weight

Ask about allocation, not just about the firm

The single most useful question is what the last two articles in that seat actually did, month by month. A firm's overall profile tells you little about your allocation within it. Being placed in one recurring compliance task for three years is common and largely invisible at the interview stage unless you ask directly.

  • Ask what your predecessor in this seat worked on across a full year
  • Ask whether rotation between audit, tax and advisory is actual or nominal
  • Ask how many clients an article typically touches in a year
  • Ask who reviews your work and how often

Study leave in practice, not in policy

Every firm states a study leave policy. What matters is whether it holds when a deadline collides with your attempt. Ask specifically how leave was handled for articles in the last two exam cycles, and whether anyone deferred an attempt because of work. The answer to that question predicts your exam outcome more reliably than the firm's brand does.

  • Confirm the stated leave period and when it must be applied for
  • Ask whether any article deferred an attempt due to workload
  • Check how audit season overlaps with your likely attempt months
  • Get the expectation in writing where the firm allows it

Location is a three-year cost

A ninety-minute each-way commute across articleship is roughly a thousand hours — comparable to the study time an entire level demands. In the larger cities this is the most underweighted factor in the decision, and it is worth more than a modest difference in stipend or a marginally better-known name.

  • Compute the total commute hours over the full articleship period
  • Weigh it against the stipend difference in actual terms
  • Consider living near the firm rather than near coaching
  • Traffic-heavy cities make this the decisive factor more often than not

Before you accept a seat

Before you accept a seat

  • Confirm what the previous article in this specific seat worked on
  • Confirm the study leave position with reference to the last two exam cycles
  • Compute total commute hours across the full articleship period
  • Confirm whether rotation across service lines is real or nominal
  • Confirm the registration formalities and timelines with ICAI on icai.org
  • Speak to at least one current article at the firm without a partner present

Does the firm's name matter for my first job?

It helps, particularly for corporate and consulting roles, but it matters less than students assume and its effect fades within a few years. What you actually did carries more weight in interviews than where you did it, especially once you can describe complete engagements.

How long is articleship under the New Scheme?

Practical training was reduced to two years under the New Scheme of Education and Training, with training commencing after clearing both groups of Intermediate and completing the required ICITSS courses. Verify the current requirement and sequencing on icai.org, as these conditions have been revised.

Should I take industrial training?

It is worth considering if you intend to move into industry, because it gives direct corporate exposure and often a stronger stipend. Confirm the eligibility conditions and permitted duration with ICAI before planning around it.

Please note

These guides are study and planning aids prepared by Kartavvya, which is not affiliated with ICAI. Eligibility conditions, registration windows, fees, exam frequency and applicability cut-offs are set by ICAI and change between attempts — the New Scheme of Education and Training in particular has revised several of them. Always verify the current position on icai.org and in ICAI's announcements for your attempt before acting on anything here.
