Where chartered accountants actually go after qualifying

Practice, industry, consulting, financial services and the routes that are less visible from inside the exam — with the trade-off each one asks you to accept.

Overview

The CA qualification is unusually broad, which is a genuine advantage and a real difficulty: the choice is wide enough that most students postpone it until qualification, and then decide under time pressure. This guide sets out the main routes, what each actually asks of you day to day, and which decisions you can still reverse later.

Independent practice

Starting or joining a practice means running a business as much as applying technical knowledge. Early years are dominated by compliance work — tax filings, statutory audit for smaller entities, GST returns — because that is what builds a client base. The compensation curve is slow at first and uncapped later, and it rewards people who are comfortable with client development rather than only with technical depth.

  • Highest long-run autonomy and the only route where you build a transferable asset in the practice itself
  • Slow first three to five years while the client base forms
  • Requires comfort with business development, not just technical work
  • Easier to enter directly after qualifying than to return to later

Audit and assurance in a firm

Large-firm audit gives structured training, exposure to listed and multinational clients, and a recognisable credential. The work is deep in a narrow band — you may spend two years on one industry — and the hours during audit season are demanding. It remains the most common first destination and one of the easiest to move out of afterwards.

  • Strong technical grounding in standards on auditing and financial reporting
  • Recognised credential that opens industry roles later
  • Seasonal intensity, with peaks that are genuinely severe
  • Specialisation can narrow quickly — choose the industry allocation deliberately

Industry — controllership and finance

Moving into a company's finance function means owning outcomes rather than reviewing them. Roles run from financial reporting and controllership through FP&A, treasury and internal audit. Hours are steadier than in practice, progression depends more on business partnering than on technical depth, and the ceiling is set by how well you connect finance to operating decisions.

  • More predictable hours and a clearer work-life boundary
  • Progression rewards commercial judgement over technical depth
  • Early specialisation matters — controllership and FP&A diverge quickly
  • Sector choice compounds; moving between industries gets harder over time

Consulting, transactions and advisory

Transaction advisory, valuation, risk consulting and management consulting draw heavily on CA training while asking for a different skill set — structuring ambiguous problems and communicating to people who are not accountants. Entry is most straightforward directly after qualifying or after a few years in audit, and it is harder to enter later from a controllership role.

  • Fast skill acquisition and broad exposure across sectors
  • Demanding hours, comparable to or exceeding audit
  • Communication and structuring matter as much as technical accuracy
  • Best entered early; lateral entry narrows after several years elsewhere

Financial services and capital markets

Banking, asset management, credit and equity research value the CA qualification for its analytical grounding, though these routes often expect an additional signal such as CFA progress or a specific internship. Compensation can be high, the work is market-facing, and roles are more cyclical than in industry or practice.

  • Analytical grounding transfers well, particularly in credit and research
  • Often expects a complementary qualification or relevant internship
  • More cyclical — hiring tracks market conditions
  • Location-dependent, concentrated in Mumbai and Bengaluru

The routes students underestimate

Public sector undertakings, regulators, academia, forensic accounting, sustainability assurance and finance roles at technology companies all recruit chartered accountants and are far less visible from inside the exam. Several offer unusual autonomy or stability relative to the mainstream routes, and they are worth investigating during articleship rather than discovering after it.

  • Public sector and regulatory roles offer stability and defined progression
  • Forensic and sustainability assurance are growing specialisations
  • Technology-sector finance roles increasingly recruit CAs directly
  • Investigate during articleship, when exploration is cheap

When should I decide between practice and industry?

During articleship, not after qualifying. Articleship is the cheapest time to test a preference, and the choice is far more reversible in the first two or three years after qualifying than it becomes later. Waiting until you qualify means deciding under time pressure with less information.

Does the route I start in lock me in?

Less than students fear, but not indefinitely. Movement from practice to industry is common and straightforward in the early years. Movement in the other direction, and lateral entry into consulting or financial services, gets progressively harder after about five years.

Do I need an additional qualification alongside CA?

For most routes, no. It matters mainly for specific destinations — CFA for investment and research roles, or a specialised certification for forensic or information systems work. Adding a qualification without a specific destination in mind rarely repays the time.
