Intermediate · Paper 6

Financial Management and Strategic Management

A numerical half and a written half that need opposite preparation. Most students under-prepare Strategic Management and then discover it is half the paper.

FM and SM sit under one cover but share nothing. Financial Management is formula-driven and rewards the same rehearsal that Cost Accounting does. Strategic Management is a writing paper that rewards frameworks and vocabulary. The most common failure pattern in this paper is a strong FM section and a thin, generic SM section written in the last 40 minutes.

Exam snapshot

Marks

100 marks

Duration

3 hours

Negative marking

None in the descriptive part; check the notification for the objective part

Pass requirement

40% in the paper, 50% in group aggregate

Paper format

FM 50 marks and SM 50 marks; part objective and part descriptive — confirm the current split in your exam notification

Confirm the pattern, marks split and any objective component against the ICAI notification for your own attempt before planning around it.

How the paper is built

Section A — Financial Management

50 marks

Computation plus short theory

Capital budgeting and cost of capital anchor the section.

Section B — Strategic Management

50 marks

Descriptive and application

Frameworks applied to short business scenarios.

Where the marks sit

Bands follow the weightage published by ICAI for the current scheme. Read them as a guide to study order, not as a prediction of any one paper.

Capital budgeting and investment decisions

Steady15–20%

NPV, IRR, payback and a recommendation.

Cost of capital and capital structure

Steady15%

WACC computation appears nearly every attempt.

Working capital management

Steady12–15%

Estimation of requirement, and receivables or inventory policy.

Financial analysis, leverage and ratios

Steady10%

Ratio interpretation, not just computation.

Strategic analysis frameworks and competitive strategy

Rising20–25%

The largest single block in Section B.

Strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation

Steady20–25%

Organisational structure, control and change.

Questions that repeat

These are the forms that come back attempt after attempt. Each one has an opening move — the thing to write down before you start computing.

01

Capital budgeting with a recommendation

Every attempt10–14 marks

Cash flow schedule, discounting, NPV or IRR, and an accept-reject decision.

How to attack it

Build the cash flow table first, with depreciation added back and tax applied correctly. Then discount. Then recommend explicitly — the recommendation is separately marked.

02

Cost of capital / WACC computation

Most attempts8–12 marks

Component costs weighted by book or market values.

How to attack it

State whether you are using book or market weights before computing. The question usually specifies, and using the other one invalidates the answer.

03

Working capital estimation

Most attempts8–12 marks

Current assets and liabilities projected from operating data.

How to attack it

Format recall again. Build the standard statement and add a note for every assumption about holding periods.

04

Strategic framework applied to a scenario

Every attempt5–8 marks

Apply a named analytical framework to a short business situation.

How to attack it

Name the framework, lay out its elements as headings, then place the scenario's facts under each. Generic strategy prose without the framework's structure scores poorly.

05

Strategic management short theory

Every attempt4–6 marks

Definitions, distinctions and the purpose of a strategic tool.

How to attack it

Use the syllabus vocabulary. This section is marked on terminology as much as on ideas.

Your three hours

A starting plan for the paper. Adapt the order to your own strengths — the point is to walk in with an order decided, because deciding it in the hall is what leaves questions unattempted.

  1. 0–10

    First 10 minutes

Read both sections. Allocate 85 minutes each and hold the line — this is the paper where budgets slip.

  2. 10–95

    FM block

Capital budgeting and cost of capital first, then the shorter computations.

  3. 95–170

    SM block

Write SM in headed points with framework names. Do not let it become an essay.

  4. 170–180

    Final review

Check that every FM computation ends in a stated decision and every SM answer names its framework.

Avoidable losses

Every one of these costs marks after the work was already done. They are the cheapest marks on the paper to recover.

Treating SM as the section you can wing

What it costs

Half the paper, routinely

Do this instead

It carries 50 marks and rewards structure more than insight. Two weeks of framework practice moves this section further than another month of FM.

Computing an NPV and stopping

What it costs

The decision mark on every capital budgeting question

Do this instead

Always write the recommendation sentence. 'The project should be accepted as the NPV is positive' is a mark you have already earned by computing.

Writing SM answers as free prose

What it costs

Structural marks the examiner is looking for

Do this instead

Name the framework, use its elements as headings, apply the facts. Structure is the marking scheme.

How to prepare

  • Prepare SM as a vocabulary subject. Frameworks by name, elements by heading, and the syllabus's own terms. Ideas expressed in your own words score lower than the same ideas in the study material's language.
  • Rehearse the FM formats. Cash flow table, WACC statement, working capital statement. Three skeletons carry most of Section A.
  • Time-box both halves in practice. Practising them separately is why the split fails in the exam. Write one full paper with a clock at least twice.

Which section is harder?

FM is harder to learn; SM is harder to score. FM has a clear right answer you can verify while practising. SM feels easy to read and produces vague, unmarkable answers unless you have rehearsed the frameworks and their vocabulary.

Can I pass on FM alone?

Not reliably. Each half carries 50 marks, and a strong FM section with a thin SM section lands most students close to the line rather than clear of it. The efficient path is competence in both, not excellence in one.

How much of SM is memory?

The frameworks and terminology are memory; the application is not. Papers give you a short scenario and expect the framework laid over it. Memorising without practising application produces answers that list elements but never touch the facts.

Please note

Weightage bands follow the skill-wise and chapter-wise weightage published in the ICAI syllabus and study material for the current scheme. Frequency labels (Every attempt / Most attempts / Alternate attempts / Occasional) describe recurring question forms observed across recent past papers and are editorial guidance, not an ICAI statistic — no breakdown here predicts what will be asked. Paper patterns, marks splits and the MCQ share change between schemes and notifications: always confirm against the exam notification and study material for your attempt before planning around any figure on this page.
