Final · Paper 4

Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation

A volume and currency paper. International taxation has become a reliable block, and last year's material is actively dangerous here.

Direct Tax at Final level tests both the depth of the domestic law and the international taxation layer above it. The papers reliably combine a computation of total income for a company or complex assessee, provision-based questions across the Act, and international taxation questions on residence, transfer pricing and treaty application. More than any other paper, its correct answers depend on the assessment year and the amendments applicable to your attempt.

Where the marks sit

Bands follow the weightage published by ICAI for the current scheme. Read them as a guide to study order, not as a prediction of any one paper.

The anchor computation of the paper.

Questions that repeat

These are the forms that come back attempt after attempt. Each one has an opening move — the thing to write down before you start computing.

01

Computation of total income for a company

Every attempt14–18 marks

Business income adjustments, disallowances, set-off and carry-forward, and the final tax computation.

How to attack it

Use a fixed skeleton and a note for every disallowance. The notes are where the marks concentrate — the arithmetic is comparatively cheap.

02

International taxation application

Every attempt8–12 marks

Residential status, source rules, treaty benefit, or withholding on a cross-border payment.

How to attack it

Establish residence and source first, then ask whether a treaty applies and which article governs. That sequence answers most of these questions.

03

Transfer pricing computation or method selection

Most attempts8–12 marks

Arm's length price using a prescribed method, or identification of associated enterprises.

How to attack it

Name the method and justify the choice before computing. The justification is separately marked and frequently omitted.

04

Procedure and timeline question

Every attempt4–6 marks

Assessment, reassessment, appeal or revision timelines and the competent authority.

How to attack it

Pure memory. Keep a single sheet of every period and authority and revise it weekly — this is the cheapest block in the paper.

Your three hours

A starting plan for the paper. Adapt the order to your own strengths — the point is to walk in with an order decided, because deciding it in the hall is what leaves questions unattempted.

  1. 0–40

    Objective block

Case scenarios first. They are computation-adjacent and reward a fresh head.

  2. 40–95

    Main computation

Write the large total-income computation with full notes while concentration holds.

  3. 95–165

    Provisions and international

Take the provision questions and the international taxation block, concluding each explicitly.

  4. 165–180

    Final review

Verify the assessment year across every answer and complete any missing disallowance notes.

Avoidable losses

Every one of these costs marks after the work was already done. They are the cheapest marks on the paper to recover.

Preparing from material for a superseded assessment year

What it costs

Systematically wrong answers with correct method

Do this instead

Confirm the applicable assessment year and amendments at the start of your preparation. In this paper it is the single highest-consequence detail.

Treating international taxation as optional

What it costs

Close to a third of the paper with transfer pricing included

Do this instead

It is now a dependable block and it is finite. The students who skip it are competing for the remaining marks against those who did not.

Computing without notes

What it costs

The reasoning marks in the anchor question

Do this instead

Every addition, disallowance and exclusion needs a one-line justification. The computation without notes reads as assertion.

How to prepare

  • Maintain a live amendment sheet. Rates, thresholds, limits and new provisions, updated as you study. Revise it weekly and again the night before.
  • Prepare international taxation properly. Residence, source, treaty application and transfer pricing methods. It is smaller than it looks and it appears every attempt.
  • Rehearse the computation skeleton. One format, written from memory, converts the biggest question on the paper into a structured fill-in exercise.

Talk to us
How much has international taxation grown?

Enough that it can no longer be treated as an optional block — with transfer pricing included it accounts for a substantial share of recent papers. It is also finite and rule-based, which makes it a better return on study time than deepening domestic areas you already know.

Can I rely on last year's study material?

No. This is the paper where superseded material does the most damage, because the method stays right while every rate, threshold and limit goes wrong. Work from the material and amendments applicable to your attempt.

Are section numbers necessary here?

For the provisions that recur, yes — they add precision and are expected at Final level. Elsewhere, a correctly stated and applied rule earns the marks. Never cite a section you are unsure of.

Weightage bands follow the skill-wise and chapter-wise weightage published in the ICAI syllabus and study material for the current scheme. Frequency labels (Every attempt / Most attempts / Alternate attempts / Occasional) describe recurring question forms observed across recent past papers and are editorial guidance, not an ICAI statistic — no breakdown here predicts what will be asked.
