Accounting
The paper that decides whether Foundation feels manageable or brutal. Accounting rewards format discipline more than memory — journal entries, ledgers and final accounts have exactly one accepted presentation, and marks follow it.

Why this paper matters
Accounting is the spine of the entire CA course. Every concept here reappears at Intermediate in Advanced Accounting and at Final in Financial Reporting. Students who rush Foundation Accounting pay for it twice more.
Chapter-wise weightage
Indicative distribution based on the published syllabus structure. Always confirm against the ICAI study material for your attempt.
- Theoretical Framework & Accounting Process25–30 marks
- Final Accounts of Sole Proprietors20 marks
- Partnership Accounts20 marks
- Company Accounts15 marks
- Bank Reconciliation, Depreciation, Inventory15 marks
How to actually score it
- Master the format before the logic. A correct answer in the wrong format loses presentation marks. Write ten journal entries by hand before you attempt any problem set.
- Working notes are marks, not scratch. Every figure that isn't self-evident needs a numbered working note beneath the main statement. Examiners award them separately.
- Partnership is the highest-yield chapter. Admission, retirement, death and dissolution repeat every session. Nail goodwill valuation and revaluation and you have secured 20 marks.
- Do BRS and depreciation daily, not weekly. These are short, mechanical and fully predictable. Fifteen minutes a day keeps them exam-ready without eating study blocks.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Skipping working notes because the calculation felt obvious
- Using closing capital instead of average capital in goodwill problems
- Mixing up the debit and credit convention in revaluation accounts
- Leaving final accounts unbalanced instead of showing the difference and moving on

Talk to usHow many hours a week should I give Foundation Accounting?
Around 10–12 hours a week across the preparation period, front-loaded to the practical chapters. It is the single largest time investment of the four Foundation papers and it pays back at Intermediate.
Is Foundation Accounting subjective or objective?
Paper 1 is subjective — you write full solutions by hand, with working notes. That makes presentation and format discipline as important as getting the right figure.
Which chapters carry the most marks?
The accounting process and theoretical framework block, final accounts of sole proprietors, and partnership accounts together account for the majority of the paper. Prioritise them before company accounts.
