Why this paper matters
Auditing is what most articleship assistants do daily. Understanding assertions, risk and evidence at Intermediate makes both your articleship and Final Advanced Auditing far more navigable.

- Audit Evidence & Sampling20 marks
- Company Audit & Audit Reports25 marks
- Ethics & Professional Conduct15 marks
How to actually score it
- Answer in audit vocabulary, not plain English. Assertion, sufficiency, appropriateness, material misstatement, reasonable assurance. Using the exact term is what separates a full-mark answer from a passable one.
- Learn Standards on Auditing by what they require you to do. For each SA, hold the objective and the required procedure. The requirement is what gets examined, not the standard's history.
- Audit report questions are format questions. Modified, qualified, adverse, disclaimer — learn exactly when each applies and the wording that follows. This block is highly predictable.
- Ethics is short and fully scoring. Professional misconduct schedules and independence threats are finite, memorisable, and appear every session.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Writing general commercial reasoning instead of audit terminology
- Confusing the auditor's responsibility with management's responsibility
- Mixing up the circumstances that trigger a qualified opinion versus a disclaimer
- Treating ethics as optional reading in the final week

Talk to usHow do I memorise the Standards on Auditing?
Group them by audit phase — planning, risk, evidence, reporting — rather than by number. Recall follows the sequence of an actual audit, which is also how questions are framed.
Is Auditing purely theoretical?
It is theory in form but practical in substance. Most questions give a scenario and ask what the auditor should do, so answers must be procedural and specific.
Does articleship help with this paper?
Substantially. Students who have performed vouching, verification and documentation in practice write noticeably more precise answers than those studying it purely from books.
