Big 4 Careers for CAs: Getting In and Growing Fast
The Big 4 (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) are the largest recruiters of fresh CAs in India, hiring through campus placements, articleship absorption and laterals. Service-line choice at entry — audit, tax, advisory or consulting — shapes your exit options more than the firm's name on the door.

The three entry routes
CAs enter the Big 4 through:
- Articleship absorption — training with the firm and converting; the highest-probability route.
- ICAI campus placements — rank and attempts weigh heavily in shortlisting.
- Lateral hiring — 1–3 years of relevant experience; the standard route into advisory lines from audit or industry.
Service lines and what they buy you
Exit options differ sharply by line:
- Statutory audit: strongest technical foundation; exits into financial reporting, controllership and internal audit.
- Tax (direct/indirect/transfer pricing): deep specialisation; exits into in-house tax teams and boutique consulting.
- Deal advisory / transaction services: the premium line; exits into PE, corporate development and IB-adjacent roles.
- Risk and consulting: broadest problem variety; exits into strategy and operations roles.
The growth ladder
Typical Big 4 progression: Associate/Executive (0–2 yrs) → Senior (2–4) → Assistant Manager/Manager (4–7) → Senior Manager (7–10) → Director → Partner (12–16). Attrition is a feature, not a bug — most CAs use the first four years as a paid finishing school before moving to industry at a premium.

Talk to usDo the Big 4 hire only rank holders?
No — ranks help in campus shortlisting, but articleship conversions and laterals dominate actual headcount, where performance and interview quality outweigh attempt history.
Which Big 4 service line pays the most?
Deal advisory and specialised tax (M&A, transfer pricing) generally price above statutory audit at every level, at the cost of more volatile hours.
Is Big 4 experience necessary for a good CA career?
No — it is an accelerant, not a prerequisite. Mid-size-firm CAs routinely build stronger practices, and industry roles hire on skills. The Big 4 brand mostly buys optionality in the first five years.
