CA Articleship Guide: Choosing a Firm and Surviving Two Years
Articleship is the two-year practical training between Intermediate and Final — the part of the CA course that turns exam knowledge into professional judgment. Firm choice is a career decision disguised as a training formality: Big 4 depth in one vertical versus mid-firm breadth across audit, tax and accounts.

Big 4 vs mid-size vs small firm
Each firm type trades one advantage for another:
- Big 4: brand, structured methodology, large-client exposure, best stipends — but often a narrow slice of one vertical (e.g., only statutory audit of one sector).
- Mid-size firms: the classic all-rounder training — audit, income tax, GST, company law and client handling in the same year. Best for future practitioners.
- Small firms: maximum responsibility earliest, flexible study leave — but exposure depends entirely on the principal's practice mix.
- Industrial training (final year option): 9–12 months inside a company's finance team, ideal for students targeting industry careers.
What good training looks like
Regardless of firm size, two years should leave you with: independent handling of at least one full statutory audit cycle, income-tax and GST return filings done end-to-end, exposure to notices/assessments, and working fluency in Excel and one accounting package. If a year passes with only vouching, escalate or consider a transfer within ICAI's rules.
Balancing training with Final preparation
The core tension of articleship: Final's syllabus assumes study hours that training days don't leave. The working pattern that survives contact with reality — weekday evenings for one running subject (usually tax), weekends for practical papers, and a dedicated leave block before the attempt as allowed under ICAI's leave rules.

After clearing both groups of CA Intermediate and completing ICITSS — unlike the old scheme, you cannot start training after just one group.
What stipend do articles get?
ICAI prescribes minimum monthly stipends by city and year of training; market reality ranges from around ₹2,000–5,000 in small firms to ₹15,000–25,000 in Big 4 metros.
Can I transfer my articleship?
Transfers are freely allowed in the first year; second-year transfers are restricted to specified grounds (relocation, medical, firm closure) under ICAI regulations.
