CA Salary in India: What Chartered Accountants Actually Earn

Fresh CAs in India average around ₹7–12 LPA, with ICAI campus placements typically averaging ₹9–13 LPA and top offers crossing ₹25 LPA (international roles higher). Five years in, the distribution widens sharply: industry managers at ₹18–35 LPA, Big 4 managers similar, and practice income entirely a function of the book you build.

What freshers earn, by employer type

The same membership number prices very differently across employer types in the first year:

  • Big 4 (audit/tax): ₹8–13 LPA metro packages, with advisory lines paying toward the top of the band.
  • Large corporates and banks: ₹9–15 LPA for finance, treasury and internal audit roles.
  • Mid-size CA firms: ₹5–8 LPA — lower cash, but broader exposure and a faster route to partnership.
  • Startups: ₹10–20 LPA with ESOPs for controller-type roles, at higher volatility.
  • International (Middle East campus offers): packages equivalent to ₹30–60 LPA appear at the top of ICAI placement drives.

What actually moves the number

Rank and attempts matter at entry; skills and P&L ownership matter after:

  • First-attempt passes and rank holders command visible premiums in campus placements.
  • Articleship pedigree (Big 4 / strong mid-tier) prices higher than exposure-light training.
  • Specialisations with scarcity — Ind AS advisory, M&A tax, transfer pricing, forensic — outpace generalist audit within 3–5 years.
  • City matters less than employer type: metro Big 4 vs small-city firm is the real gap.

Practice vs employment

Practice starts slower and compounds harder. A first-generation practitioner may draw less than a Big 4 fresher for the first 3–5 years while building clients; a stabilised practice with audit, tax and advisory lines can out-earn most employed peers by year ten — with no retirement age. Employment offers immediate cash, structured growth and an exit ramp into CFO tracks.

What is the starting salary of a CA in India?

Most freshers land between ₹7–12 LPA. ICAI campus placement averages have hovered around ₹9–13 LPA recently, with top domestic offers above ₹25 LPA and international offers higher still.

Do rank holders earn more?

At entry, yes — AIR holders and first-attempt passers get preferential shortlisting and premium offers in campus placements. The effect fades after 4–5 years, when performance and specialisation dominate.

Which CA specialisation pays the most?

M&A tax, transfer pricing, Ind AS/IFRS advisory, and deal advisory consistently price above statutory audit. Niche scarcity, not workload, drives the premium.
