Overview
The Foundation route is the standard entry path for students coming directly from school. The rules themselves are straightforward; what costs students an attempt is timing — registering after a cut-off, or assuming the study period runs from the exam rather than from registration.
Who is eligible
A student may register for the Foundation course after appearing in the Class 12 examination conducted by an examining body constituted by law in India, or an examination recognised by the Central Government or the State Government as equivalent. Registration and eligibility to sit the examination are separate things: a student may register after appearing in Class 12, but must have passed it before appearing in the Foundation examination.
- Register after appearing in the Class 12 examination
- Must have passed Class 12 before sitting the Foundation examination
- Recognised equivalent qualifications are also accepted
- There is no minimum percentage requirement for this route
The study period requirement
ICAI prescribes a minimum study period between registration and eligibility to appear in the examination. This period runs from the date of registration, not from the date you begin studying, which is the detail students most often get wrong. Registering late by even a few days can push your first attempt to the next cycle, so the registration date should be planned backwards from the attempt you intend to sit.
- The study period runs from the registration date
- Plan registration backwards from your intended attempt
- ICAI publishes the cut-off date for each attempt — check it before registering
- Late registration costs a full cycle, not a few weeks
Papers and passing requirement
The Foundation course comprises four papers covering accounting, business laws, quantitative aptitude and business economics. Two papers are subjective and two are objective, with negative marking applicable to the objective papers under the scheme. The passing requirement combines a minimum in each paper with an aggregate across all four, and both conditions must be satisfied together.
- Four papers across accounting, law, quantitative aptitude and economics
- Objective papers carry negative marking — confirm the current scheme
- Both the per-paper minimum and the aggregate must be met
- Confirm current paper structure and marking on icai.org
What to do immediately after registering
Download the current ICAI study material for your registration cycle rather than using material from an earlier one, particularly for business laws where amendments matter. Identify the Revision Test Paper and Mock Test Paper for your attempt, and check the ICAI announcement stating which amendments are applicable. Doing this in the first week prevents the most expensive category of error in the course — studying superseded material.
- Download study material for your own registration cycle
- Locate the RTP and MTP for your intended attempt
- Note the applicability cut-off announced for that attempt
- Set up a single place to record amendments as they arise

Talk to usCan I register for Foundation before my Class 12 results?
You may register after appearing in the Class 12 examination, but you must have passed it before you sit the Foundation examination. Registering early is generally advisable because the prescribed study period runs from the registration date.
How many times a year is the Foundation examination held?
ICAI has revised the examination frequency under the New Scheme. Because this has changed and may change again, confirm the current schedule and the applicable cut-off dates directly on icai.org rather than relying on any secondary source.
Is there a minimum percentage requirement in Class 12?
No. The Foundation route has no minimum percentage requirement. Minimum percentage conditions apply to the Direct Entry route for graduates and post-graduates, which is a separate path.
Please note
These guides are study and planning aids prepared by Kartavvya, which is not affiliated with ICAI. Eligibility conditions, registration windows, fees, exam frequency and applicability cut-offs are set by ICAI and change between attempts — the New Scheme of Education and Training in particular has revised several of them. Always verify the current position on icai.org and in ICAI's announcements for your attempt before acting on anything here.
