The Direct Entry route: registering at Intermediate as a graduate
Percentage thresholds differ for commerce and non-commerce graduates, and the sequencing of training requirements is where most direct-entry students go wrong.

Overview
Direct Entry lets graduates and post-graduates skip the Foundation examination and register straight for Intermediate. The eligibility test is a percentage threshold that differs by stream. The part that causes trouble is not eligibility at all — it is the sequencing of the study period, the ICITSS courses and practical training.
Who qualifies
Graduates and post-graduates of the commerce stream are eligible with a lower aggregate percentage than those from other streams, reflecting the overlap in subject matter. Candidates who have passed the intermediate level examination of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India or the Institute of Cost Accountants of India are also eligible to register directly at Intermediate. The precise percentage thresholds and the list of qualifying subjects are prescribed by ICAI and should be checked directly.
- Commerce graduates and post-graduates qualify at a lower percentage threshold
- Non-commerce graduates and post-graduates qualify at a higher threshold
- Candidates who have passed the ICSI or ICMAI intermediate examination are eligible
- Confirm the current thresholds and qualifying subject list on icai.org
Provisional registration for final-year students
Students in the final year of graduation may register provisionally, which lets them begin preparation before results are declared. Provisional registration must be regularised by submitting proof of having met the percentage requirement within the period ICAI prescribes. Failing to regularise within that window is a recurring and entirely avoidable problem.
- Final-year students may register provisionally
- Regularisation requires proof of meeting the percentage threshold
- There is a prescribed window for regularisation — diarise it on registration
- Failure to regularise in time affects examination eligibility
The sequencing that catches people out
Under the New Scheme, the order of the study period, the ICITSS courses and practical training was revised, and practical training now commences after both groups of Intermediate are cleared. Direct-entry students who planned around the previous sequence — where training could begin earlier — frequently discover the change late. Confirm the current sequence before you plan an attempt around it, because the order determines when you can first sit the Intermediate examination.
- A minimum study period applies from the date of registration
- ICITSS courses must be completed before practical training commences
- Practical training commences after clearing both Intermediate groups under the New Scheme
- Verify the current sequence on icai.org — it has been revised
Planning the first attempt
Direct-entry students carry an advantage in familiarity with accounting and law, and a disadvantage in time — they typically attempt Intermediate while also finishing or having just finished a degree. Build the plan around the study period requirement first, then work backwards to decide whether one group or both are realistic for the first attempt. Attempting both groups without adequate preparation time is the most common direct-entry error.
- Confirm the earliest attempt your registration date permits
- Decide between one group and both on hours available, not optimism
- Commerce background helps most in accounting, least in costing and FM
- Plan ICITSS scheduling early — it competes with study time

Talk to usWhat percentage do I need for Direct Entry?
The threshold is lower for commerce graduates and post-graduates and higher for other streams. Because these thresholds and the list of qualifying subjects are prescribed by ICAI and have been revised over time, confirm the exact figures on icai.org before relying on them.
Can I register while still in my final year?
Yes, provisionally. You must then regularise the registration by submitting proof that you met the percentage requirement within the period ICAI prescribes. Diarise that deadline at the time of registration — missing it affects your examination eligibility.
Is Direct Entry easier than the Foundation route?
It skips one examination, which saves time. It does not make the Intermediate level easier, and direct-entry students often have less preparation time because they are simultaneously completing a degree. The saving is in months, not in difficulty.

Eligibility conditions, registration windows, fees, exam frequency and applicability cut-offs are set by ICAI and change between attempts — the New Scheme of Education and Training in particular has revised several of them.
