Overview
Intermediate registration is administratively simple and strategically consequential. Two decisions made at registration — which attempt to target and whether to sit one group or both — shape the following eighteen months more than any study plan does.
Who can register and when
Students who have passed the Foundation examination may register for Intermediate, as may those eligible under the Direct Entry route. Registration is valid for a prescribed period and may be revalidated on payment of a fee. A minimum study period applies between registration and eligibility to appear, and it runs from the registration date — so the date you register determines your earliest possible attempt.
- Foundation-qualified and Direct Entry candidates may both register
- Registration validity is time-limited and revalidation carries a fee
- The study period runs from registration, not from when you start studying
- Register with a specific target attempt already in mind
Structure under the New Scheme
The New Scheme of Education and Training restructured Intermediate into two groups of three papers each, covering advanced accounting, corporate and other laws, taxation, cost and management accounting, auditing and ethics, and financial management with strategic management. The passing requirement combines a per-paper minimum with a group aggregate, and exemptions in individual papers operate under conditions ICAI prescribes.
- Two groups of three papers each under the New Scheme
- Both the per-paper minimum and the group aggregate must be satisfied
- Paper-wise exemption rules apply — confirm the current conditions
- Verify the paper structure for your attempt on icai.org
One group or both
Attempting both groups together saves an attempt cycle and enables set-off across a larger aggregate, but it requires substantially more preparation time and a realistic assessment of hours available. Attempting one group is the better choice for students working full time, for direct-entry students finishing a degree, and for anyone whose available study hours are genuinely uncertain. Decide on hours you can commit, not on the outcome you would prefer.
- Both groups: saves a cycle, requires materially more preparation time
- One group: lower risk, higher chance of a clean pass, costs a cycle
- Working students and final-year graduates usually do better with one group
- Base the decision on committed weekly hours, not on intention
ICITSS and practical training sequencing
The ICITSS courses — orientation and information technology — must be completed before practical training commences, and under the New Scheme practical training begins after both Intermediate groups are cleared. Schedule the ICITSS courses deliberately, because they consume full days and collide badly with a study plan if left to the weeks before an attempt.
- Complete ICITSS before practical training commences
- Practical training follows clearing both Intermediate groups under the New Scheme
- Schedule ICITSS away from your intended study run-up
- Confirm the current sequencing on icai.org — it has been revised
At registration
At registration

- Proof of date of birth and identity
- Note the registration validity period and diarise the revalidation date
- Compute the earliest attempt your registration date permits

Talk to usHow long is Intermediate registration valid?
Registration is valid for a prescribed period and can be revalidated on payment of a fee. Note the expiry at the time of registration — students who take several attempts sometimes discover a lapsed registration close to an examination form deadline.
Should I attempt one group or both?
Base it on hours you can genuinely commit each week rather than on the timeline you would prefer. Both groups saves a cycle and allows set-off across a larger aggregate; one group substantially raises the probability of a clean pass and suits working students and those finishing a degree.
When does articleship start under the New Scheme?
Practical training commences after clearing both groups of Intermediate and completing the required ICITSS courses. This sequencing was revised under the New Scheme, so confirm the current requirement on icai.org before planning around it.

These guides are study and planning aids prepared by Kartavvya, which is not affiliated with ICAI. Eligibility conditions, registration windows, fees, exam frequency and applicability cut-offs are set by ICAI and change between attempts — the New Scheme of Education and Training in particular has revised several of them. Always verify the current position on icai.org and in ICAI's announcements for your attempt before acting on anything here.
