Paper 3 — Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics
Professional ethics is asked every attempt and is the highest-return chapter in the paper. Standards on Auditing supply the rest.
Paper at a glance
Advanced Auditing is a paper of applied judgement written under time pressure, and the students who do well are those who can state a Standard on Auditing and apply it to a fact pattern in three tight paragraphs. Professional ethics under the Chartered Accountants Act is asked in every attempt and is comparatively finite, which makes it the single best return on revision time. Company audit, audit reports and the risk-assessment standards supply the remaining computational and application marks.

Revision priority
Revise first
P1Asked every attempt, heavy marks, and — in the case of ethics — a finite syllabus that can genuinely be mastered.
- Professional Ethics — Chartered Accountants Act & Schedules
- Standards on Auditing — Risk Assessment & Response
- Audit Reports & Reporting Requirements
- Company Audit & CARO
Revise second
P2Regular appearances with specialised content that transfers poorly from other chapters.
- Audit of Banks and Non-Banking Financial Companies
- Audit of Consolidated Financial Statements
- Internal Audit & Due Diligence
Do not skip
P3Newer and lighter areas that appear as short questions and are easy marks when prepared.
- Digital Auditing & Data Analytics
- Quality Control (SQC 1)
- Sustainability and Assurance Engagements
Typical question structure
Case scenario — multiple choice on audit judgement
Read the scenario twice before the options. These turn on one detail planted deliberately.
Professional ethics — misconduct scenarios
Name the clause and the schedule. That reference is where the marks concentrate.
Standards on Auditing applied to a fact pattern
Cite the SA number, state the requirement, then apply. Three short paragraphs.
Audit report — modification or emphasis of matter
Decide the type of modification first, then justify it. State the reasoning explicitly.
Specialised audit — bank, NBFC or consolidated
These reward specific procedures, not general audit language.
How to use this paper
- Master professional ethics completely. It is finite, asked every attempt and worth close to a fifth of the paper. No other chapter offers that return.
- Learn Standards on Auditing by number and requirement. Answers that cite the SA and its requirement outscore answers that describe good audit practice generically.
- Write in three short paragraphs. Provision, application, conclusion. Long undifferentiated prose is the most common presentation failure in this paper.
- Practise case-scenario MCQs under time. Thirty marks of scenario-based objective questions can consume an hour if you have not practised the format.

Talk to usHow important is professional ethics in CA Final Audit?
It is asked in every attempt and typically carries sixteen to twenty marks. Because the syllabus is finite — the Chartered Accountants Act and its schedules — it is the single highest-return chapter in the paper.
Do I need to remember Standard on Auditing numbers?
Yes, for the frequently examined ones. Citing the correct SA number alongside the requirement demonstrates precision and consistently outscores a generic description of good practice.
How do I answer an audit case scenario?
State the applicable standard or provision, apply it to the specific facts given, then conclude with the auditor's course of action. Keep the three as separate paragraphs so the examiner can find each without searching.
