Paper 1 — Financial Reporting
Consolidation and the revenue, leases and financial instruments standards dominate. Depth beats breadth in this paper.
Paper at a glance
Financial Reporting is the paper where selective preparation fails most visibly, because questions routinely combine two or three standards inside one scenario. Across recent attempts, consolidated financial statements have been near-certain, with Ind AS 115, Ind AS 116 and the financial instruments standards supplying the bulk of the remaining computational marks. The RTP is particularly valuable here because it shows the depth at which ICAI expects a standard to be applied — which is usually deeper than a summary suggests.

Revision priority
Revise first
P1Asked in every recent attempt and frequently combined with one another inside a single scenario.
- Consolidated Financial Statements (Ind AS 110)
- Financial Instruments (Ind AS 32, 107, 109)
- Revenue from Contracts with Customers (Ind AS 115)
- Leases (Ind AS 116)
Revise second
P2Heavy when asked, and structurally close to the first bucket — preparation transfers well.
- Business Combinations (Ind AS 103)
- Income Taxes (Ind AS 12)
- Property, Plant & Equipment and Impairment
Do not skip
P3Reliable short questions that many candidates leave unprepared, and the cheapest marks in the paper.
- Integrated Reporting
- Share-Based Payment (Ind AS 102)
- First-time Adoption (Ind AS 101)
Typical question structure
Consolidated financial statements with adjustments
The longest question in the paper. Working notes for goodwill, NCI and intra-group elimination are mandatory.
Ind AS 115 or Ind AS 116 application scenario
Work the standard's own steps in order — the five-step model, or lease identification then measurement.
Financial instruments — classification and measurement
Classify first, then measure. Getting classification wrong invalidates everything after it.
Business combination or deferred tax
Identify the acquirer and the acquisition date explicitly before computing.
Integrated reporting or a short theory question
Short, definitional and reliably asked. The easiest marks on the paper to secure.
How to use this paper
- Read the RTP for depth, not for coverage. It shows how far into a standard ICAI expects you to go, which a summary or chart cannot convey.
- Practise combined-standard scenarios. Real questions blend standards. Studying each one in isolation leaves you unprepared for the format actually used.
- Write the consolidation question in full at least five times. It is the single largest block of marks in the paper and is entirely a matter of format discipline.
- Do not neglect the theory questions. Integrated reporting and disclosure questions are short, predictable and repeatedly left unprepared.

Talk to usHow many Ind AS should I prepare in depth for Final FR?
Prepare consolidation, financial instruments, Ind AS 115 and Ind AS 116 to full computational depth, and the rest to the level of being able to state the principle and apply it to a short scenario. Depth in the top four matters more than shallow coverage of all.
Are Financial Reporting questions really combined across standards?
Frequently, yes. A single scenario may require revenue recognition, a lease assessment and a deferred tax consequence together. Practising standards in isolation is the most common preparation gap in this paper.
Is Financial Reporting the hardest CA Final paper?
It is among the most demanding in volume and depth, but it is also one of the most predictable in structure. The chapters that carry the marks are stable across attempts, which makes disciplined prioritisation unusually effective.
