Paper 1 — Advanced Accounting
Accounting Standards dominate. Consolidation and company final accounts are near-certain, and neither is optional.
Paper at a glance
Advanced Accounting rewards students who treat Accounting Standards as the spine of the paper rather than as a theory chapter tacked on at the end. Across recent attempts, AS-based questions — whether as standalone application problems or embedded inside a larger computation — have consistently carried the largest share of marks. Consolidated financial statements and company final accounts follow, and both are long questions where presentation is worth as much as arithmetic.

Revision priority
Revise first
P1Asked in every recent attempt and carrying the heaviest marks. These four alone approach a pass on their own.
- Accounting Standards — Application
- Consolidated Financial Statements
- Company Final Accounts (Schedule III)
- Amalgamation & Internal Reconstruction
Revise second
P2Regular appearances with predictable formats. Once the working-note structure is fixed, these are efficient marks.
- Partnership — Dissolution & LLP Conversion
- Branch & Departmental Accounts
- Buy-back & ESOP
Do not skip
P3Lower frequency but specialised formats you cannot improvise in the hall. Two focused sittings each is enough.
- Accounting for Banking Companies
- Insurance Claims
- Investment Accounts
Typical question structure
Accounting Standards — four short application scenarios
State the standard, the relevant paragraph principle, then apply it. Conclusion without the principle scores half.
Consolidated balance sheet with minority interest
Goodwill, minority interest and pre-acquisition profits as separate working notes, always.
Company final accounts under Schedule III
Schedule III format is itself marked. Learn the line-item order, not just the numbers.
Amalgamation or internal reconstruction
Identify the method the question prescribes before computing anything.
Branch accounts or partnership dissolution
Choose the format — debtors system, stock and debtors, or final accounts — and state your choice.
How to use this paper
- Solve the AS questions in writing, in full. Accounting Standards answers are marked on structure — standard, principle, application, conclusion. That structure only becomes automatic by writing it.
- Treat consolidation as a format, not a computation. The arithmetic is easy; the marks sit in laying out goodwill, minority interest and reserves correctly.
- Compare your presentation against the Suggested Answers. For this paper, the gap between a well-prepared student and a high scorer is almost entirely presentation.
- Time the long questions individually. A sixteen-mark consolidation should take under thirty minutes. If it takes fifty, the paper is already lost regardless of accuracy.

Talk to usHow much of Advanced Accounting is Accounting Standards?
Directly, roughly a fifth to a quarter of the marks in recent attempts. Indirectly, more — standards are embedded inside consolidation, amalgamation and final accounts questions, so weak AS knowledge costs marks well outside the AS question itself.
Is the Schedule III format actually marked?
Yes. Line-item order, headings and the notes structure carry marks independently of the figures. Reproducing the format correctly is among the cheapest marks in the paper.
How should I use the RTP for this paper?
Solve it closed-book, in writing, question by question, then compare presentation against the Suggested Answers rather than only checking whether your figures matched.
