IBS Case Study Builder — Break Long Cases Into Facts That Matter

Integrated Business Solutions is not hard because the concepts are hard — most of them you already cleared at Intermediate. It is hard because the material arrives as a long, deliberately noisy narrative, and the exam tests whether you can find the five facts that matter and identify which subject each one belongs to. This tool does that decomposition with you, until you can do it alone.

Fourteen pages, five facts that matter. The map shows which fact feeds which sub-question — and how much of the case is context you can stop re-reading.

How it works

  1. 01

    Load or generate a case

Work through a practice case, or paste one you are studying. The length is the point — short cases do not build the skill.

  2. 02

    Extract the fact blocks

The narrative gets split into discrete facts, each one separated from the context that surrounds it and given a reference.

  3. 03

Map each fact to its subject lens

A foreign currency loan is a financial management fact. An unminuted board resolution is a law fact. The map makes those assignments explicit.

  4. 04

Trace each sub-question back to its facts

Sub-question 3(b) draws on three fact blocks. The rest of the case is context — and knowing that is most of the time saving.

The difficulty is structural, not conceptual

Students describe IBS-style cases as confusing rather than difficult, and that description is accurate. The concepts are drawn from papers you have already studied. What is new is the format: a long narrative in which relevant facts sit next to irrelevant ones, with no headings telling you which subject any paragraph belongs to. That is a comprehension and triage skill, and it is trainable separately from the technical syllabus.

  • Each fact separated from the narrative and given a reference you can cite
  • Subject lens assigned per fact — reporting, financial management, audit, law, tax
  • Sub-questions traced back to the specific facts they depend on
  • Context explicitly marked as context, so you stop re-reading it

Cross-references are where the marks hide

The distinctive feature of an integrated case is that one fact carries consequences in two subjects at once. An acquisition is a consolidation question and a due-diligence question. A related-party lease is an accounting disclosure and an audit risk and possibly a law compliance failure. Answers that treat each sub-question in isolation miss those links, and the links are usually where the higher marks sit.

Build the habit, then drop the tool

The goal is not to have a map generated for you in the exam hall — you will not have one. It is to make the decomposition automatic, so that the first read of a long case produces a mental fact list rather than a feeling of being overwhelmed. Work several cases with the map, then work the next one without it and compare.

Check the current paper format

ICAI has revised the CA Final paper structure under the New Scheme of Education and Training, including the treatment of multidisciplinary case study material and which papers are open book. Confirm the format, permitted materials and mark distribution applicable to your attempt on icai.org before building a strategy around any of them.

What is IBS?

Integrated Business Solutions is the multidisciplinary case study paper at CA Final, which draws together material across the Final syllabus rather than testing one subject in isolation. Confirm the current paper number, format and permitted materials for your attempt on icai.org, as these were revised under the New Scheme.

Why are these cases so long?

Deliberately. Length and irrelevant detail are part of what is being tested — the paper is assessing whether you can identify the facts that carry consequences, which is a real professional skill. A short case would not test it.

Should I read the case or the questions first?

Most students do better reading the sub-questions first, then reading the case with those questions in mind. It converts an undirected read into a search, which is faster and considerably less overwhelming.

Is it enough to know each subject well?

Necessary but not sufficient. The paper rewards seeing that one fact has consequences in two subjects at once, and that connection is a separate skill from knowing either subject. It is the part worth practising specifically.
