Paper 4 — Cost and Management Accounting
A paper decided by length, not difficulty. Marginal costing, standard costing and process costing recur almost without exception.
Paper at a glance
Cost and Management Accounting is rarely conceptually hard and frequently unfinished. The MTP is the only reliable way to find out whether you can actually complete it, because the arithmetic volume is high and every long question carries a format that must be reproduced rather than improvised. Marginal costing, standard costing and process costing form the core; budgetary control and service costing supply the medium-weight questions that decide whether you clear comfortably or narrowly.

Indicative pattern compiled from publicly available past papers, RTPs and MTPs. It is a revision-sequencing aid, not a prediction — and not a basis for leaving any chapter unprepared.
Revision priority
Revise first
P1Asked every attempt with the heaviest marks. These three chapters can carry close to half the paper between them.
- Marginal Costing & Decision Making
- Standard Costing & Variance Analysis
- Process & Operation Costing
- Cost Sheet & Reconciliation
Revise second
P2Regular medium-weight questions with fixed formats that reward drilling more than understanding.
- Budget & Budgetary Control
- Material & Labour Cost
- Job, Batch & Contract Costing
Do not skip
P3Lower frequency, but each carries a distinctive format you cannot construct on the spot.
- Service Costing
- Overheads — Absorption Costing
- Activity Based Costing
Typical question structure
Multiple choice across the syllabus
Mostly short computations. Budget forty-five minutes and hold to it.
Marginal costing — decision scenario
Identify the relevant costs first. Anything unavoidable is noise the question planted deliberately.
Standard costing — variance computation
Tabulate SQ, SP, AQ, AP before computing, and close with the reconciliation.
Process costing with normal and abnormal loss
Equivalent units statement first. Everything downstream depends on getting it right.
Budgetary control or service costing
Flexible budgets need a clear cost-behaviour split stated up front.
How to use this paper
- Time each question, not just the paper. This paper is lost by overrunning two long questions. Per-question timing is the diagnosis you need.
- Practise formats until they are reflexive. Cost sheet, equivalent units and variance tables are reproducible layouts. Reconstructing them in the hall costs minutes you do not have.
- Do the objective section against a clock. Thirty marks of MCQs can quietly consume an hour. Cap it deliberately.
- Always show working notes. In a computational paper, working notes are where partial marks live when the final figure goes wrong.

Talk to usWhy do students run out of time in Costing?
Because the arithmetic volume is high and the formats are long. The usual failure is spending fifty minutes on a fourteen-mark question rather than not knowing the chapter. Per-question timing during MTP practice is the fix.
Which chapters give the best return in Costing?
Marginal costing, standard costing and process costing between them have carried close to half the marks in recent attempts, and all three reward drilling a fixed format.
Do working notes really carry marks?
Yes, and they are the main source of partial credit. A final figure that is wrong for one arithmetic slip still scores well if every intermediate step is visible and correct.
